Megan and Rebecca’s engagement session in Asbury Park felt like a night out together more than anything else. We didn’t overcomplicate it, we just moved through the town the way you normally would on a date. Walking, stopping, noticing things, and letting the environment shape the session.
Asbury Park is one of my favorite locations for engagement sessions in New Jersey because of how much variety you get in a small area. Murals, texture, the boardwalk, the beach—it all flows together in a way that makes the session feel dynamic without needing to go far.

Movement, Texture, and In-Between Moments
We started in the streets, leaning into the murals and architecture, letting the movement of the city set the tone. Holding hands, walking, turning back toward each other. It was nothing overly posed, just guided in a way that kept things moving. As we made our way toward the beach, everything softened a bit. Shoes came off, the wind picked up by the ocean, and the energy shifted as the sun set. That’s one of the best parts about Asbury Park…there’s so much dynamic and experiences to be had!

Beach Light and Film Nostalgia
We timed their session to move from golden hour into blue hour, which gave us that mix of warm light and moodier tones. Shooting on both digital and 35mm film added another layer to it—the film especially holding onto that nostalgic, slightly imperfect feeling that fits so well at the beach. By the time the sun dropped, everything felt quieter. Less movement, more closeness. Just being near the water, letting the moment settle in. If you’re interested in adding film to your engagement session, I’d love to chat with you about it.

Tips for Your Asbury Park Engagement Session
If you’re planning an engagement session in Asbury Park, a few things make a big difference:
- Timing: Sunrise or sunset will always give you the best light. Sunrise is quieter and easier for parking, while sunset into blue hour gives you that golden-to-moody transition.
- Expect movement: The beach is windy. Lean into it—it adds texture and motion to your photos.
- Bring essentials: A small bag with shoes, a brush, lip gloss, or a towel can make things easier between locations.
- Keep it simple: Treat it like a date night. Walk, talk, stay close—it doesn’t need to be anything more than that.
